What
is this?
This is a whiskey jug.
Who
made this jug?
Enoch Spinks Craven made this jug around 1870 in Randolph County.
Why
is it shaped like this?
Whiskey jugs were made with wide bases. The wide base prevented the
jug from tipping over. Also the jug has one handle unlike the syrup
jug that has two handles. Why the difference? Syrup weighs more than
whiskey, therefore the heavier jugs need two hands for easier lifting.
