Director of Craft + Design
The Mint Museum, comprising the Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, seeks a dynamic professional to oversee curatorial responsibilities for the development, care and presentation of one of the finest collections of contemporary craft and design within the United States. Director reports to the Executive Director and shall work in tandem to further the renown of this important collection. The collection’s history begins an exciting new chapter as The Mint Museum breaks ground for a 145,000 square foot building that will be the centerpiece of a thriving cultural district in the city of Charlotte. The anticipated opening of the new facility is fall 2010. The museum will provide over 18,000 square feet dedicated to the Craft and Design Collection and special exhibitions.
Applicant should have a history of scholarly publications and interactions with artists, dealers and other museum professionals within the contemporary craft field. The candidate will be responsible for researching, documenting and publishing the collection, making recommendations for building and refining the collection, and working within committees regarding all acquisitions or deaccessions relative to these holdings. The candidate will work with the leadership and trustee committees in the identification of special exhibitions of contemporary craft and design.
The candidate should thrive within a team environment and demonstrate a leadership that works well with all of the departments of the Museum. Responsibilities include assisting in the identification of grants and funding opportunities to support the collection and exhibitions, training docents, and interacting with volunteers. The incumbent is the liaison to The Founders’ Circle, LTD., whose volunteers support the Craft and Design Collection. Public speaking skills are essential as are strong interpersonal skills, curatorial vision, and an appropriate educational background in 20th century art/craft history. Advanced degree is desired.
The successful candidate should have a minimum of five years professional curatorial/management experience within a museum environment. Salary and benefits shall be commensurate with experience.
